The first session of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can come with many questions, especially if it's a new treatment for you. In order to make the experience as pleasant, safe and effective as possible, it's important to know what the procedure entails, how to prepare and what to expect.

🔍 Before starting therapy

The first step is a specialist medical consultation. The doctor will assess your health, medical history and the indication for oxygen therapy. He will also explain in detail the procedure and the recommended number of sessions according to your needs.

You will sign an informed consent and receive personalized recommendations. Before the first session you may have a series of tests or investigations, depending on your condition.

👚 How do you dress and what do you take with you?

Enter the hyperbaric chamber wearing cotton clothing without metallic elements. You should avoid synthetic clothing, perfumes, creams or make-up, as some substances can become flammable in the presence of pure oxygen. In specialized centers, you will be given appropriate equipment (medical pyjamas or disposable gown).

You can't take your cell phone, cigarette lighters, headphones or any other electronic device into the room. You can, however, watch a movie or listen to music, depending on the room's facilities.

✈️ What sensations are normal?

During room pressurization, you'll feel pressure in your ears, similar to what you feel when you're flying in an airplane. This is perfectly normal and can be easily compensated for by simple techniques such as yawning, swallowing or the Valsalva maneuver.

If you feel any discomfort, just let the staff know. Therapy is generally relaxing and painless.

⏱️ How long does a session last?

A complete session lasts about 2 hours, 90 minutes of which is the actual exposure to oxygen and the rest of the time is dedicated to pressurization and depressurization.

✅ After the meeting

Most patients feel well after the session and can continue their daily activities without any problems. Sometimes there may be a slight feeling of tiredness, but this passes quickly.

It is recommended to stay hydrated and eat a light diet before therapy. Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking on the day of the therapy so as not to diminish the effects of the oxygen.

🧭 Conclusion

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a safe and non-invasive procedure, but it is important to follow the advice of specialists to maximize its effects. Proper preparation and understanding of the process will help you go through each session with confidence and comfort.
